Trivia (Who Fax)
- Though not stated specifically, this story follows directly after the previous story.
- In a break with tradition, the Daleks are not featured in the title of the story, as the story is more of an examination of the psychological impact of the Daleks rather than a "proper" Dalek story.
- While Raymond De Long and David Segal worked on the story together, De Long wrote the majority of the script while Segal wrote the vast majority of the Selenar "scriptures".
- This story is the second of a trilogy which examines Christine's evolving character and her relationship with the Doctor and new companion. Not mentioned in any stories but in a brief given to writers, Christine has aged a couple years since Playground of the Devil (165). She is now more confident and uses medieval language more sparingly. She is also more weary of the constant travelling and longs for something more permanent. This latter issue is taken up in greater detail in the following story.
- The idea of an unguarded area where prisoners were expected to stay of their own free will was inspired by The Happiness Patrol.
- The Devotion Bell was inspired by the haunting church bell in the movie Purgatory.
- The idea of an event which evolves over time into its own mythos was inspired by a story writer [Raymond] De Long and his wife used to talk about. It was about a small object they saw in the river, and they weaved a tale about a river monster that would rise up and gobble tourists. Part of this story makes its way into Iron Legion as the tale Lance tells the Doctor.
- One instruction given to the writers was that the Doctor must not defeat the Dalek by his cleverness, but rather a more ambiguous victory must be used. This was to make sure the Daleks would come across as powerful and not easily defeated. This same instruction is given for all reoccurring villains including the Master, Cybermen, Sontarans, etc.
